Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714 - 1788)
Magnificat in D Major
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827)
König Stephan
Carl Maria von Weber (1786 - 1826)
Battle and Victory (extracts)
As part of the Barock plus concert series, in which a baroque work is set against pieces from other repertories, the Hr-Sinfonieorchester teams up for the first time with accentus and Laurence Equilbey to perform Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s Magnificat in D Major, a key religious work written in 1749. Inspired by the work of Johann Sebastian Bach in the use of keys expressing joy and power, Carl Philipp Emanuel introduced new sounds: the homophonic voices, smaller choirs and lyrical arias make these pages a fine synthesis of traditional and modern scoring. The grandiose choirs of Beethoven’s König Stephan and the vigour of Weber’s Battle and Victory bring a rich counterpoint to this most stunning of baroque works.
