Mass n°2 in E minor
Bruckner’s greatest achievements as a composer may well be to have brought the divine into the present and to have given expression to the supernatural. His Mass n°2 in E minor is a fine example, using the vocal ensemble to take vertiginous tension to an extreme, using harmonies that prefigure those of the 20th century. Bruckner reworked his Mass four times, and the original version offered by accentus and the Orchestra of the Opera of Rouen Normandie. The same level of intensity recurs in his a cappella motets in which he creates a constant progression of rich chords that melt seamlessly into each other. The seven-voice Ave Maria and the gradual Locus iste and Christus factus est combine immensity and precision, sparseness and magnificence, offering in just a few minutes, a vision of eternity.
