COMALA II

Program

Niels Wilhelm Gade
Echoes of Ossian, Ouverture
Comala

Nothing less than a Nordic Odyssey, the dramatic poem Comala, discovered and published in 1761 by James MacPherson, is attributed to the legendary Scottish bard Ossian. Comala, desperately in love with Fingal, disguises herself as a warrior in order to follow the fight at close quarters. On the way to the battlefield, Fingal persuades her to stay away, promising to come to her that very evening, should he survive…
The Danish composer Niels Gade – the bicentenary of whose birth will be celebrated in 2017 – illustrated the poem with a magnificent Romantic cantata.
