Concerto 4

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Der Schauspieldirektor, ouverture

Ludwig van Beethoven

Piano Concerto No 4

Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 4 is perhaps the most inventive of his five concertos. At once an orchestral symphony and a fantasy for piano, it also has much in common with opera. The piano scoring – here at the enchanted fingertips of Nicholas Angelich on romantic piano – momentarily hints at the vocal line of a coloratura, while the orchestra – led by Laurence Equilbey – is evocative of recitatives. The parallel with the overture to Mozart’s singspiel Der Schauspieldirektor will be all the more enthralling.
