Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714 - 1788)
Magnificat
Following on from her recording of the Requiem, Laurence Equilbey leads accentus and Insula orchestra into a new challenge, with another Mozart masterwork. The Magnificat, the canticle that closes the Vesperae solennes de confessore, at once grandiose and solemn, is rounded off with a conciliatory amen. Less frequently performed, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s take on the Magnificat contains passages that are in a resolutely forward-looking vein. Written in 1749, it is the composer’s stand-out choral work, the one that he hoped would clinch his appointment to his father Johann Sebastian’s former position as cantor at Saint-Thomas Church in Leipzig.
