Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827)
Cantata on the Death of Emperor Joseph II
König Stephan
Carl Maria von Weber (1786 - 1826)
Battle and Victory (extracts)
With the Orchestra of the Rouen Normandie Opera and accentus, Laurence Equilbey continues the musical adventure begun last season on the theme of war and peace. With König Stephan, Beethoven offered an overture in nine choral movements conceived for the inauguration, in 1912, of a new theatre in Budapest, a gift from Austria to Hungary in recognition for the latter’s loyalty. Weber, by contrast, describes the battle of Waterloo in heroic terms in his cantata Battle and Victory, a shock between, on one hand, faith and hope and, on the other, violence and war. This energetic programme is wrapped up by the astonishing Cantata on the Death of Emperor Joseph II.
