Felix Mendelssohn
Christus
Gabriel Fauré
Requiem
In an effort to take inspiration from the past and a desire for renewal, two treasures of religious music are joined in this concert alongside the Orchestre de l’Opéra de Rouen Normandie. Bach’s voice permeates all of Mendelssohn’s religious music, without it ever becoming a pastiche. The unfinished oratorio Christus, for example, comprises "Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern", one of Bach’s most renowned Christmas chorales. Fauré, on the other hand, reinvents the texts for his Requiem. In between the melismata of Gregorian chant, he delivers a message of peace and comfort underlined by plastic artist Mat Collishaw’s video.
